Design Concept
The new barrier-free access is detached from the historic building and thus corresponds to the high standards of the protected object:
The surrounding pavement lifts up, transforms into a sculptural object that responds to the „Gate to the Ring“ (James Wines/SITE Architecture Art Design, 1992) and ends in a bridge that connects to an existing opening which was no longer in use.
The space behind this opening – a former bookstore – is re-opened to full height and houses a new elevator, that connects to the Columned Main Hall – the access to the exhibitions.
